Rescuing the Rare American Bull Dog

Published by

A breed of dog considered almost extinct at one time, but now referred to as rare, has in increasing numbers, been handed over to American bull dog rescue organizations. Originating in England, this dog was a strong and forceful working companion whose job was to chase bulls, other cattle, and hogs. It was once believed that chasing a bull made the meat tenderer. That belief ended eventually, and the breed was replaced by the English bull dog. Some workers who had become attached to their personalities and hard work, brought the taller bull dogs to America with them where they are now accepted as a breed in the American Kennel Association.

Physically, the American bull dog is white with brown, red or black markings, blue, brown or amber colored eyes, and soft, light colored or black muzzles that droop down resembling the mouths of a boxer or mastiff which means they drool. In fact, they are a descendant of the English mastiff. This breed of bulldog has been known for saving its owners from fires, fighting against dangerous animals and humans who seek to cause harm to their families. These dogs are truly American heroes. Yet, because it’s becoming more common to give them up, or because they have been abused or neglected, they are being turned into American bull dog rescues in several states. The need to adopt them out is high.

Seeking to educate the public on the characteristics of these dogs to increase adoption into loving, permanent homes, the American bull dog rescue organizations have websites, information and photos all over the Internet. If the breed is understood, a better match can be made which lessens the chances of a returned dog. It is important to realize this is not a lap dog, although he would love to be in your lap at every moment.

Because he is a strong, working class dog, this breed needs exercise. And when around small children whom he is known to adore, he may be a little too exuberant and accidentally knock one down. Also known to get along quite well with other pets and to want to please his owners, the American bull dog is one of the best of family dogs who only want to be a part of your family, not part of the property. He can be stubborn, which is why so many are turned over to American bull dog rescue groups, but he also is a loving companion who, with you as pack leader, will give you years of enjoyment.
